The Norwegian Railway Directorate: Gained economies of scale by gathering four pages into one
The Norwegian Railway Directorate is a public administrative body that coordinates between the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the other actors in the railway sector in Norway. It is responsible for the strategic, comprehensive and overall planning and co-ordination of the railway sector.
The challenge
The Norwegian Railway Directorate's previous website appeared outdated and inconsistent with the Directorate's design profile. In addition, they wanted to gather all existing and future projects under a common umbrella on a new platform, developed on a single framework. The launch project also included updated websites for Lokførerskolen, ntpmetode.no and Konnekt, so they could work more easily and benefit from economies of scale.
The website also contained a large number of documents, and it was challenging to find relevant information due to a lack of categorization, search and filtering.
The result
New and holistic design
If you visit Jernbanedirektoratet.no today, you will be greeted by a modern and appealing website that reflects today's design standards. At the same time, the site prioritizes easy navigation and clarity over radical aesthetics, as befits a public administrative body.
Some visual differences have been taken care of (especially for the Train Driver School), while most pages have a clear common thread. The Norwegian Railway Directorate has also developed a complete style guide and a toolbox of design elements to ensure a coherent approach to presentations and infographics in the future.
Easier updates with Multisite
The same ease of use that visitors experience on the website is also found under the hood. The simple Multisite solution allows all four websites to be edited through the same WordPress setup. Everything is gathered in one place, and is available to everyone behind a single login.
Neat and clear document base
As a report-heavy organization, the Norwegian Railway Directorate has also received help to collect and organize its documents. Where people previously struggled to find what they were looking for, they can now easily filter documents based on the categories they are interested in.
